Locations of Satellite Galaxies in the Two Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey

چکیده
We compute the locations of satellite galaxies in the Two Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey using two sets of selection criteria and three sources of photometric data. Using the SuperCOSMOS rF photometry, we find that the satellites are located preferentially near the major axes of their hosts, and the anisotropy is detected at a highly-significant level (confidence levels of 99.6% to 99.9%). The locations of satellites that have high velocities relative to their hosts are statistically indistinguishable from the locations of satellites that have low velocities relative to their hosts. Additionally, satellites with passive star formation are distributed anisotropically about their hosts (99% confidence level), while the locations of star-forming satellites are consistent with an isotropic distribution. These two distributions are, however, statistically indistinguishable. Therefore it is not correct to interpret this as evidence that the locations of the star-forming satellites are intrinsically different from those of the passive satellites. Modelling galaxy clustering: is new physics needed in galaxy formation models?
The clustering amplitude of galaxies depends on their intrinsic luminosity. We compare the properties of publicly available galaxy formation models with clustering measurements from the Two-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey. The model predictions show the same qualitative behaviour as the data but fail to match the observations at the level of accuracy at which current measurements can be mad...
متن کاملA Potential Galaxy Threshing System in the Cosmos Field
We report on the discovery of a new potential galaxy threshing system in the COSMOS 2 square degree field using the prime-focus camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope. This system consists of a giant elliptical galaxy withMV 21:6 and a tidally disrupted satellite galaxy withMV 17:7 at a photometric redshift of z 0:08. This redshift is consistent with the spectroscopic redshift of 0....
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملThe Abundance and Radial Distribution of Satellite Galaxies
Using detailed mock galaxy redshift surveys (MGRSs) we investigate the abundance and radial distribution of satellite galaxies. The mock surveys are constructed using large numerical simulations and the conditional luminosity function (CLF), and are compared against data from the Two Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). We use Monte Carlo Markov Chains to explore the full posterior dis...
متن کاملRedshifts in the Southern Abell Redshift Survey Clusters. I. the Data
The Southern Abell Redshift Survey (SARS) contains 39 clusters of galaxies with redshifts in the range 0.0 < z < 0.31 and a median redshift depth of z̄ = 0.0845. SARS covers the region 0 < δ < −65, α < 5, α > 21 (while avoiding the LMC and SMC) with | b |> 40. Cluster locations were chosen from the Abell and AbellCorwin-Olowin catalogs while galaxy positions were selected from the Automatic Plat...
